Seti@Home is a very cool project that uses peoples spare CPU cycles to search for signs of intelligence in broadcast TV. No wait that's not it, they are searching for signs of intelligent life in records collected from radio telescopes. Since I think this is a worthy and cool cause I have a couple of machines cranking away:

  • Pointless - My primary desktop machine. A 1.4Ghz Athlon with 512mb's of RAM, running Linux
  • mp3box - as the name implies this is system that lives under the stereo and plays MP3's for a living. A PentiumMMX 200mhz with 96mbs of RAM, running Linux.
  • bollocks - currently a test server of sorts, will replace Discworld at some point. It's a 500mhz P3 Xeon w/372 mb's of RAM, running (of course) Linux
Currently Discworld (acerbic.org server) and Midget (my laptop) aren't running Seti@Home. Discworld probably never will, I don't like the idea of unneeded software on a server, but Midget will get it just as soon as I get around to installing it.

I'm also a member of Vulture Central the Seti@Home group for The Register my favorite online tech magazine.
